Let not forget the pioneer Fatuma Roba who came out of nowhere to dominate the 1996 Marathon.

I had the distinct pleasure of meeting Fatuma Roba this past April when she stopped in DC after the Boston Marathon. She was surprised that someone recognized her. One of my favorite Olympic moment is when in '96 while she was still on the marathon course, she came up on couple of Ethiopians holding a large Ethiopian flag. She stretched out her arm, touched the flag, and kissed her fingers. I still get goose bumps when I think of that moment.

As for today's marathon, I think Zhou Chunxiu will take the title on home turf, with Deena Kastor and Ndereba in the top five. The order of finish for Ethiopians will be Tune, Adere, and Wami.

The runners from China are dangerous. NBC says that China has very few chances to win a Medal other than this event so watch out. Gete I think will be our best chance.

Slow race so far...

Looks like the Brit runners are here with a plan. Liz Yelling is leading early and Paula shadowing. Ethiopians are bunched in the middle. Looks good so far.

Dire Tune is looking really good. Paula is working now.

The runners from China have to make a break soon. They don't want a sprint. Ndereba is laying low so are the Ethiopians.

Dita breaking away... Romanians are always a real threat... almost always get medal in the marathon in the last few championships.

Constantina Tomescu makes a break same point where Fatuma Roba made the break. This is dangerous. No one responds. Paula does not respond. Maybe Paula is not in great shape. Dire Tune is part of the chase pack and looks good.

The chase pack has it's work cut out for it. Constantina Tomescu Dita is opening up a gap. Paula is working hard. Somehow I don't think Paula is in great shape.

I hate NCB... replaying 100M semi-finals. Constantina is looking good and is aggressive. Brehane will need to sprint to win. It's been done before.

Gete and Berhane have fallen off the chase pack. Dire Tune is part of the chase pack. Berhane is desperately trying to make it back into the chase pack. Not a good thing for Berhane to exert her energy here trying to catch the chase pack.

So far this is not a good race. I don't think the preparation was good for the team.

Ethiopians are fading. Paula is fading. Only Dire Tune has a chance and she is falling off the chase pack.

No medal today.

This was an amazing run by Constantina Dita. Looks just like the Gold Medal run by Fatuma Roba in 1996. Somehow we have lost our way.

Gete Wami and Brehane Adere DNF. What a shame.

Dire Tune comes in 15th. Obviously the team preparation was very bad. Results don't lie.

It sucks. Berhane and Gete are saving themselves for the lucrative results.
Good job Dire.

I agree! Preparation was bad. I am afraid the usual suspects will win gold but the rest will not do well.
